Review- Sennheiser RS 180 Wireless Headphone

Sennheiser as a brand is quite popular for high-quality headphones, and quality purists generally just heap to them for the same reason. But, cordless headphones are a different game altogether. Audiophiles emphasize that a high quality cable is the only way to go, but Sennheiser begs to differ. 

But the Sennheiser’s RS 180 is quite different from the usual wireless headphone, as it makes use of high bandwidth 2.4 GHz wireless technology to transmit sound from the base station to the headphone. Sennheiser has named it - 'Kleer Transmission Technology' and it actually works quite well because it transmits uncompressed digital audio.

When you connect the transmitter to a power outlet and to an audio source (television, DVD/Blu-Ray player, MP3 player, music system, mobile phone or any other media player), it quickly starts transmitting to the headset, hence no configuration or setup needs to be done.

The headset is quite big, but extremely comfortable and lightweight. The design can be customized and adjusted to your needs, and the cups are padded with soft fabric. Two AAA rechargeable batteries are provided with the unit, which can power them for about 18 to 20 hours depending on volume.

In order to charge the batteries, you can just bob the headphones on to the transmitter. The AAA batteries can be easily accessed and hence are replaceable with any off-the-shelf pair once these are over.

Some of the cons of Sennheiser RS 180 headphone are:

1) You can find the controls for left-right balance, volume and power on one side of the ear cup. Their placement may make them difficult to access easily. The controls are quite hard to press and seem to be placed much too close to each other. The positioning can definitely be a drawback, and needs to be improved by the company in their headphones.

2) Price! If you are techno-freak then you might be delighted to get this goody but the price is a bit much on the range. If the price for Sennheiser RS 180 seems to be too overwhelming for you then you can opt for Sennheiser RS 160 and RS 170 ranges too which are priced much cheaper, and also have Sennheiser's much hyped "Kleer" technology incorporated in them. The difference in all these models can be noticed in the designs, distance and quality, where RS 180 of course leads amongst all in quality and range which is around 320 feet (100 meters).

3) The distance range of the transmission is applicable only if you stay in direct line with the transmitter, without any obstruction in between. With walls and other interferences, the range may get reduced to 50-60 feet than the regular 320 feet.

So, if you are looking forward for quality in music, without getting bound by wires and are willing to pay the price for your music love, then Sennheiser - RS 180 can be the best choice for you.
